Just the Facts
How much do you know about offshore wind? Find out by reading through the cards and separating facts from fiction.
- TRUE!
Offshore wind will create economic opportunity for New Yorkers.
Community Offshore Wind will create hundreds of new jobs and billions in economic activity – including millions of dollars of spending in disadvantaged communities and workforce development programs. ding in disadvantaged communities, and $41 million in workforce development programs.
- FALSE!
U.S. offshore wind development is linked to whale deaths.
Scientific agencies, including NOAA, have not found a connection between wind project activity and whale mortalities. Climate change is warming oceans and changing the distribution of prey that marine species depend on, bringing whales closer to shore where they are more vulnerable to ship strikes and entanglement.
- TRUE!
You won’t be able to see our turbines from shore because they are too far away.
Our wind turbines will be 64 miles from New York at their closest point, and entirely out of view from shore.

- FALSE!
The electromagnetic fields from the power lines are dangerous to my health.
The electromagnetic field (EMF) of power lines are grouped into the non-ionizing category which is generally perceived as harmless to humans.
- FALSE!
Offshore wind is not a reliable source of energy.
Offshore wind farms have become an essential, reliable part of electrical grids in many countries. While fossil fuel prices are extremely volatile, offshore wind offers cleaner power at a fixed rate, and reduces reliance on foreign energy resources.
- TRUE!
Building offshore wind farms will improve public health.
By replacing fossil fuels with renewable power like offshore wind, New York is dramatically reducing emissions that contribute to respiratory illnesses like asthma, and improving air quality for communities.
- FALSE!
Offshore wind is a new, unproven technology that is too risky for New York.
Offshore wind is not a new technology – the first offshore wind project was built in 1991! More than 64 GW of offshore wind capacity is online around the world, reliably generating zero-emission power for thousands of communities.

WHERE IS IT
Where is Community Offshore Wind's lease area from New York?
Before offshore wind projects are selected by individual states, developers bid in federal "lease area" auctions, which determine the area of the ocean where they can build new offshore wind farms.
Community Offshore Wind’s awarded lease area is located in the Atlantic Ocean between Long Island and New Jersey.
Is our wind farm visible?
Our turbines will be 64 miles from New York at their closest point, and completely out of view from the shore.
